Saw the preview of Anonymous today....Loved it...

It was made on the premises that the works of Shakespeare were not created by him but by Elizabethan aristocrat, Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford. He did not want his name to be known for various reasons. I was really impressed by the dialogues, the storyline, costumes and sets. If you get a chance to watch the movie - than don't miss it! :)

On an recent visit to the pacific coast I was enamored by these amazing, wonderful creatures. It was so much fun to watch them, they seemed almost drugged with sleep-only time they moved was to find just the right corner to snuggle in...

He was bigger than other in the group- almost an alpha male- - making his displeasure very evident for disturbing his sleep.

They look so angelic in their sleep, one can easily forget the tremendous strength and power they possess....

Last year during my trip to India, on my very first morning there, I saw this gorgeous peacock with amazing tail full of spectacular feathers, right in my uncle's backyard...yup there ....again :)Well, not only was he stunning with dazzling colors, he was also very elusive… I was not able to get a really good shot of him….. this is one of the better ones....

I was sipping on my herbal (tusli-Indian basil and Ginger) tea one morning (yum-yum - another story) when I spotted couple of woodpeckers in the yard.

They are such beautiful birds with beautiful stripes and amazing plume (?) on their head- which fans out. I presume when they are excited…I am not sure though, would have to research it a bit further.

The one in the first picture still had some fuzzy growth around his neck; I am guessing he was still young at the time.

One of my favorite pictures! It was taken at Galtaji- Jaipur.

When I was growing up I had heard so much about Galtaji, that when we got a chance to visit, I jumped at it. I was just a tad disappointed with the condition it was in, specially the green water. Also, It did not help that I was little scared of the monkeys! But, I must admit-their curiosity, and their playful nature filled my heart with joy and ....trepidation at the same time

This chandelier in the lobby caught my eye. Actually I was quite enamored by it.

Top of the Rock? All these pictures are from the 70th floor of Rockefeller Plaza (Also known as Top of the Rock), which is 850 feet or 260 m above ground.

This building stood out for me- it was so traditional/old school (in a good sort of way) in midst of all the steel high rise buildings!

I found the architecture fascinating. All the swirls, on top of each other, reminded me of a beautiful cake (I think I must have been hungry). It must be fascinating to sit on the other side in the building and have a office.

In picture: rock formations around the city

I was in Sedona most of last week for a business trip. These are some of the pictures/moments from the week…

The unusual red colors of the earth/rocks come from the Iron oxide in a post-glacial flooding that filled all of the Verde Valley.

My first evening started with a cool glass of ‘Sangria’ which is Red wine with La Pinta pomegranate tequila, hibiscus and triple sec! I must say it is worth a try…

In picture: Chile Relleno with a side of corn tortilla, and beans topped with salsa

Dinner was Chile Relleno with vegetable picadillo, goat cheese and queso Oaxaca. Vegetable picadillo was an interesting twist to the dish! I wonder that’s why chef called it picadillo!

Many homes have adobe style, which can also be seen through out south west. House on the botton of the hill reflects the style.

Play of light on the leaves caught my eye...outside Hilton

I saw use of red rocks in the design elements though out the city, which creates a very harmonious visual effect…almost one with nature.

There is a very big influence of Native American heritage on art.

I fell in love with this vibrant-colorful/so-full-of-mischief sculpture by a local artist. It was also so-out-of-my price-range!

Tamed...The tall one is Saguaro- an cactus found only in Arizona. It can grow several stories tall.

At the end of the trip, we did get a chance to visit Palatki and Honanki Ruins. They are both a World Heritage site.

The people responsible for creating the ruins are the Sinagua (literally means without water) people, who lived in central Arizona between 500 AD and 1425. There are no signs of them anywhere and historians are not certain but they surmise that warfare and drought were key factors in their departure or extinction.

Brahma Ghat: eternally peaceful
Pushkar lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake, in the Thar desert in the state of Rajasthan in India.The picturesque lake of Pushkar is set in a valley, surrounded by hills on three sides and sand dunes on the fourth. Pushkar is one of the sacred places for the Hindus; it has five principal temples, many smaller temples and 52 Ghats where pilgrims bathe in the sacred waters.
I really loved the time we spent there, some times I wish was there again. For me the turbaned heads of men, and colorful veils and skirts of the women, truly brought alive the arid desertscape. .

One thing we are very particular about is clean bathrooms in the hotels we stay in, Pushkar was no exception. It took us a while to find this one! Very clean….

We were sitting on the Ghats enjoying some live folk music when we saw a SUV stop with very dark tinted windows. It took me by surprise to see a bunch of women who kept spilling out it…. they were very sweet and readily agreed to posed for some pictures.

During his wonderful recital we got chatting with him, when he told us about his family history, and that they have been singing on the Ghats for generations, and he hoped his children will continue the tradition. It is his second wife (in pictures) who accompanies him these days; she had a very powerful raw voice. He was very used to the tourist culture and it did not surprise us when at the end of the session he produced shoddily prepared a CD for us to buy at exorbitant price!

The South Street Seaport in Manhattan, is considered a historical district, featuring some of the oldest architecture in downtown Manhattan, and includes the largest concentration of restored early 19th-century commercial buildings in the city.

Pier 17 offers amazing views of Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. I found out recently that the Brooklyn Bridge is in fact one of the oldest suspension bridges in US and upon completion in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world!!

For me it was more of actully visiting someplace I had heard referred to so many times, and I was not disappointed.

The desert has come alive with the blooming wildflowers and trees. Some years the blooms are more abundant than others, and I think this year was one such year. The weather has also been beautiful lately, with really nice-long-cool evenings, just the right weather to enjoy outdoors.

I go through phases…reading in spurts.

So these are some of the books I recently read…"Sister of My Heart" nourished some part of me which was seeking connection with my Indian self…And nourished it did. After, I finished reading it I moved on to "The Namesake"…very well written, could see glimpses of me…..

"Lucifer Effect" had a very interesting viewpoint on the terrorism and how youth dedicate their lives to it…choose death over life, by psychologist Philips Zimbardo and lastly "Year of Magical Thinking"…on loss and grieving by Joan Didion…again a great read.

Oranges, great taste and refreshing fragrance….

When I first saw orange trees lining the streets in Arizona, I was impressed, and than I learned that these were ornamental orange trees. The fruit is very bitter to taste and the tree itself is not very hardy. And you can imagine by disappointment and bewilderment.

So, why would one plant bitter tasting fruit trees, and not the edible kind? Beats me…any guesses?

One of our favorite things is to go for drive during a rain or a snow storm. The snow storm on Christmas day was no exception… since the freeways were all jammed we took the back roads and were rewarded with breath taking beauty of the day.

View from our room in Clearwater beach, Florida. . I can easily say that it was really an breathtaking view to wake up to.

What more can a girl want? Company of loved ones, breakfast of scrambled eggs, hash browns and English muffins, with hot tea and to top it all -the view!!

Pool on the beach…seamless- where one ended the other began.

One can tell by the number on chairs on the deck, that it was quite a popular place to rest and relax.

Recently went to a party hosted by some of our Middle Eastern friends at “Layalena- Mediterranean Experience” in the city. It was a night filled with laughter, friends, good food and drinks and singing and dancing…… ahem…yes dancing ……
Star of the show- Roxana- had many-a-men drooling! :)

My attempts at creative touch…

Got to experience live band playing Lebanese, Jordanian, Iranian, and Iraqi and so forth Middle Eastern songs….. very melodious and powerful music…

Fun…friends…and laughter…..

Eating experience started with “The Sample Mezza” with Hummus, baba ganouj, falafel, labneh, m’hammara, and grape leaves............served with a side of stuffed olives and pickled cucumber and carrots

Some Mediterranean Chicken Kebabs …. I am a-veggi!

And last but not least- the most popular drink of the night – Lebanese beer- Almaza!!

"Classic Sadabhars" outside an office compound…….they somehow always remind me of home- or rather mom’s garden in India. One of the early successes that survived…:-)

Enjoyed lunch at the neighborhood Thai restaurant …………as usual ended up eating “Pad Thai with Tofu”…one of my favorite Thai dishes after Cashew Tofu.

Our comfortable bedroom in hotel suite at the Marriott … On our way to San Clemente, we stopped at this quaint charming place for lunch….

Scenic Duluth- Minnesota

During our trip we stayed in Duluth overnight. I was quite surprised to learn that at one time it was home to more millionaires (per capita) than any other city in the world! This I could never have guessed- simply because when I think of cities with old world wealth-some place in Europe is what conjures up.

One of the most easily recognized monuments of the city is Arial Transfer Bridge -built in 1905 as a transfer bridge.

In 1929 the bridge was modified - the gondola was removed, the height of the top span increased and structural supports incorporated- into the present avatar.

Another gem in Duluth is Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory, famous for it’s migratory hawk watch. In fact, Hawk Ridge (refer to Neela Asman shot from the observation point) is recognized by the Audubon Society. Hawk Ridge acts as a “funnel” for tens of thousands of migratory hawks, eagles and other birds of prey.

Though we missed the annual migratory flight, I was pleasantly surprised to catch him looking down with an attitude of “ I am lord of all I survey!”

I was awe struck by the magnitude of the Lake Superior –largest freshwater lake in the world- it would take 191 years for the rivers in the drainage basin to refill the lake!!

Sunrise on Lake Superior-Grand Marais

These are some pictures of Lake Superior taken from the deck of our room.

Even though it got a bit cold at night, we slept with the bay windows overlooking the lake open (there was fire burning in the fireplace at night to keep us comfortable), the rising moon reflecting off the waters of Lake Superior and the sound of waves breaking across the shoreline lulled us to sleep every night.

In the morning we woke up to spectacular views of the sunrise over Lake Superior; the largest and cleanest freshwater lake. The first breath taking sunrise hooked me into getting up early in mornings.

St. Croix Scenic Byway

On the first leg of our vacation we drove along the St. Croix Scenic Byway. St. Croix Scenic Byway rambles along the alternatively wild and pastoral St. Croix River, which is also a National Scenic River way.

We drove through many charming historic towns, explored state parks and strolled through many-a-downtowns with character and architecture of decades past.

Even though we were visiting in late October, we caught the tail end of the fall colors. There is something poetic about the changing colors. It seemed as if some one had lit a fire with all these colors vividly shining through!

Hike towards the Devils Kettle water falls also filled our senses- there was so much to soak in. There were sights to behold; sounds to remember – of birds, bees and than the sound of massive waterfalls; and smells- fresh and chrisp-to take it all in.

It was a beautiful crisp day for the hike. Surprisingly met very few people- which also made it somewhat of a surreal experience.

I felt so much at peace, one with nature and maybe also with god.

Hiking in Devils Kettle falls

We were in Minnesota last fall, and I can say it was one of the truly relaxing at the same time invigorating vacations. We hiked, did scenic drives, enjoyed the local cuisine and were introduced to a different kind of life style.

During our trip we stayed in the twin cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Duluth and than in the beautiful quaint village of Grand Marais.

Grand Marais is few hours away from the Canadian border on the banks of Lake Superior. We had planned to spend only a day there but were charmed enough to squeeze another day.

Picturesque village of Grand Marais has acquired the reputation of being some sort of an artist’s haven. We were pleasantly surprised to by the warm hospitality of the place. Luckily we were there right at the end of the busy tourist season – which is also our preferred time to discover a place at leisure.

One the very first day we hiked to the Devils Kettle water falls. Even though all through the entire trip we saw more than a few waterfalls, still the Devils Kettle managed to awe us.

2nd Birthday

A friend’s daughter celebrated her second birthday. Her delight and the pleasure at her birthday party and all the things attached was very infectious and fun to watch.

Watching her also reminded me of the paradox in life- we want to grow up very fast when we are young and then want to go back to our childhoods the rest of our lives!

Annual Cherry Blossom Festival

I was in Washington DC last week for a conference. After the conference we stayed over for few days to enjoy the Annual Cherry Blossom Festival. I have to say the blossoms in full bloom are a sight to behold. Even though this was our second visit coinciding with the fortnight long festival, the sight of the trees laden with flowers was still as breathtaking. The vision and the splendor erased the memory of airline misplacing my luggage for a full 24 hours!!!!!

The blooms splendid in all their glory also make you conscious of the fleeting quality of life. For these flowers only bloom once at the onset of the spring and that too for a few days. Last year it was almost surreal to see the petals fill the Potomac’s Tidal Basin (trees are planted all around the basin forming a circle) when a strong gust of wind blew them off the trees.

I love watching humming birds flutter on the feeder early in the mornings. I never realized how territorial they can get. It is very interesting to see them chase each other away.
